THROUGH THE LENS: Jeremy Deputat
May 6th

“I don’t treat anyone different. The fame shit doesn’t matter to me. A celebrity is no different than anyone else, apart from having achieved an enormous amount of success. But when I do end up in that situation, I feed off of it and allow it to inspire me to be great,” says Jeremy Deputat, better known in his field as JD – a Detroit-based photographer, art director and all-round extrovert. Shaped by the fascination with personalities, music, and often the blend of both, the self-taught photographer holds the ability to capture emotions and intimate stories in each portrait, justly comparing his craft with time travel. “The fact that I could document a slice of time from a specific event and preserve that moment forever always intrigued me.” This attentiveness led him to shoot a range of subjects from local celebrities to a slew of hip-hop heavyweights for publications including the Rolling Stone, Billboard, TIME and XXL. Shooting hometown hero Enimem was a cornerstone achievement that he holds close; it also opened doors to some enterprising road trips. Most prominent was the chance to capture Kid Rock’s 2011 summer “Born Free” tour. With four months of shows and debauchery, 30,000 images, and numerous empty Jim Bean bottles, JD went on to produce I’m Kid Rock, What’s Your Excuse? — a 176-photobook following the rock star’s every move on tour.
While JD has archived awe-inspiring results in his career — ending his tenure in editorial design in 2009 for full-time photography — what appeals most in his work is reflected through the serendipitous, humble and open-minded approach he has towards the subject. ”I always want to make sure I understand who they are, keep it authentic, and see what happens.” Going forth with such receptiveness, JD is due to collaborate with Rick Williams and Distinct Life in addition to another book in the works. Judging by the plethora of women and whiskey in his last series, we’re sure it won’t disappoint. For more on JD follow him on Twitter and Instagram @JeremyDeputat.

THROUGH THE LENS: 335mm (NSFW)
Feb 7th

Another prominent photographer who uses Instagram as one of his many vehicles in documentation, 335mm is a self-taught shutterbug who spends his time cavorting between hometown Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Miami capturing alluring and, at times, seductive photography. Sighting his influences as Terry Richardson, Julius Shulam and Yonehara Yasumasa, 335mm blends a style that dips into the spheres of fashion, music, and urban landscape. Relying upon distinctive colors, spaces and mise-en-scéne, his aesthetic portrays an amalgamation that correlates strongly with that of his mentors. Having worked with Black Scale, Kreemo, Fresh-I-AM and shot with music power house Columbia records and Taylor Gang Ent., 335mm already houses an impressive resume in a short 3 years in the field, and with the continue onslaught of stimulating dispatch, it doesn’t look like he’s about to stop. Be on the lookout for 335mm’s collaborative Black Scale #BLVCKPUSSY T-shirt, dropping Friday, February 9 through Black Scale’s respective flagship stores.

THROUGH THE LENS: trashhand
Nov 7th

To say that Instagram has changed the traditional photography model would be quite an understatement. Despite having become somewhat diluted as of late, the large majority of the early Instagram users functioned as a tight-knit community that virtually defined the identity of the then newly minted mobile platform. Chicago-based trashhand is a strong testament to the strength of the App. The self-taught photographer began using an iPhone 4 over a year ago to visually explore the cityscape of his native Windy City. Inspired by the creativity from the likes of 13thwitness, trashhand has since gone on to amass an incredible following in excess of 150,000 followers and he has also been interviewed by Instagram, featured in the Huffington Post and he continues to do work with Nike. For his part in our THROUGH THE LENS feature, trashhand worked with his Canon 5D Mark III and a 24mm and 35mm f/1.4 lens. Cruise the set above and keep up with trashhand through his Instagram and Tumblr.

Cédric Delsaux: Dark Lens | Photography Inspired By Star Wars
Dec 13th

Photographer Cedric Delsaux will be the first to tell you the original intent of his series, Dark Lens, was not Star Wars related. Instead, it was a bare exhibition of our modern world, from the rise of skyscrapers to the decay of urban fringe. But things were amiss when Delsaux finished his grand surveys of urban landscapes. They were monotonous, simply too plain and normal. This was when the photographer, with help from Pierrick Gueneugue, added notable characters and scenes from the Star Wars series of films. Suddenly, Delsaux’s images came to life and became conduits of two universes – one real and one pure imaginary.
Compiled by French publisher Editions Xavier Barral with introduction by the ultimate Star Wars’ fan himself, George Lucas, the 118 pages Cédric Delsaux: Dark Lens is now available at ARTBOOK | D.A.P. online store.

George Lucas’ Introduction:
“Over the years, many artists have interpreted Star Wars in ways that extend well beyond anything we saw in the films. One of the most unique and intriguing interpretations that I have seen is in the work of Cédric Delsaux, who has cleverly integrated Star Wars characters and vehicles into stark urban, industrial—but unmistakably earthbound environments. As novel and disruptive as his images are, they are also completely possible. I am honored that Cédric Delsaux has brought Star Wars into the world of his photography, and happy that his exceptional work can be presented in this book.”
