WSOP 2013 November Nine All Set, No Nelly in Sight

Nine finalists to return for main event poker tournament in Vegas in four months

After nine days of intense, gruelling competition at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, for the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) 2013, the top nine chip holders from the No-Limit Hold’em Main Event emerged for a final roundup in November. Unfortunately, R&B superstar and professional poker player Nelly, didn’t make it to the finalist’s roster.

More than just hip-hop

No stranger to the poker tables, the 38-year old rapper who dished out chart-toppers such as “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma”, is also an accomplished poker player. Nelly has participated in the WSOP Main Event in 2007, as well as the European Poker Tour Grand Final in 2009. Poker portal CardPlayer got the chance to sit down with the R&B superstar and talk about his poker games. “I just want to have some fun. I play a lot of cash games but I don’t really get a chance to play tournaments,” Nelly revealed.

The big event

The PartyPoker -sponsored main event is the most prestigious proving ground for the mettle of professional poker players all over the world. Over 60 different game categories comprise the World Series Of Poker event, including the Event 6, known as the “Million Maker”, and the Main Event, a No-Limit Hold’em poker game. The winner of this event is crowned as the World Champion of Poker, and receives an exclusive WSOP bracelet.

The best of the best

This year’s prestigious November Nine consists of some of the best professional poker players, as well as some surprising newcomers. Among them is the United States’ JC Tran, the most decorated poker player in the pack. With over $8 million in total career earnings and a winner of back-to-back WSOP gold bracelets, Tran is already guaranteed more than $730,000 by earning a spot on the final table. This guarantee will become his new career-high winnings, and will push his total career winnings to over $9 million.

Five of the nine finalists, including JC Tran, are American poker players. Among them are David Benefield, Ryan Riess, and Marc Newhouse. Marc-Etienne McLaughlin, playing his fifth Main Event this year, also joins the pack in a bid to make history as the second French-Canadian to become a World Champion of Poker. Completing the group are Sylvain Loosi from France, Dutch player Michiel Brummelhuis, and Israeli hustler Amir Lehavot.

Of particular interest is the last player of the November Nine – American Jay Farber. The 28-year-old Las Vegas VIP host, while not a professional poker player, is joining the WSOP Main Event for the second time. He is also the player in the group with the least amount of poker cash-outs, with total career winnings amounting to just over $2,000. Surprisingly, he will start off in fourth place, with over $25,975,000 worth of chips, besting five other seasoned poker professionals. According to Farber, poker is more of a hobby than a career.
