Selah Sue featuring J. Cole – Raggamuffin (Supa Dups Remix)
May 17th
Even though there are seemingly no boundaries in this Internet age, popular music still differs considerably from country to country. A prime example of this is Belgian beauty Selah Sue, whose debut self-titled album premiered in the Top 10 in France, the Netherlands and Belgium upon its release in 2011 and has sold over 400,000 units to date in Europe. Despite those impressive statistics, the reggae-influenced soul artist has yet to make much of a mark in the U.S. That could be changing in the coming months, though. On August 21, Columbia Records will be releasing Sue’s debut album stateside. Included on it will be three exclusive tracks that aren’t available on other countries’ versions. One of those songs may be this brand new J. Cole and Supa Dups-assisted remix to the most well known song in her catalog, “Raggamuffin.” Give Sue’s first official U.S. release a spin below.
Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun talks Schoolboy-Universal Deal
May 17th
As Justin Bieber’s manager and professional guiding force, Scooter Braun has risen to become one of the music industry’s most sought-after entrepreneurs. Now, the 30-year old seeks to take his very own Schoolboy Records, a catalog that includes Bieber, Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen and Def Jam signee Asher Roth, to the next level by announcing a label and distribution deal with Universal Music Group. After receiving the SoundWAV Award at the Third Annual FlashFWD Awards last tuesday (May 15), the Atlanta native spoke to Billboard about his new partnership with UMG chairman Lucian Grainge and how it marks the next step of expanding his multi-faceted business.
“My business is a lot of different places – we have a television development company, we have a film development company, we’re investing in tech. But Lucian is an incredibly forward-thinking individual who happens to be the chairman of the most powerful music company in the world,” says Braun. “And he wants to embrace young people. One of the things he does that I love is, once a month, he tries to bring in interns, temps, anyone from all over the company, and have a lunch with them. Just let them talk about what works, what doesn’t work, and… absorb it. He understands that he doesn’t want to embrace the old business.”
With a time-tested resume, marketing expertise and major label backup one can only assume where the limit is for Scooter Braun and his artists.
