Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Win Best Hip-Hop Video Award At 2013 MTV VMAs

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, one of the earlier surprises of the night occurred when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis captured a “moonman” for Best Hip-Hop Video – and beating out some big names in the process.

Going up against Drake’s “Started From The Bottom,” A$AP Rocky’s “F—in’ Problems,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools,” and J.Cole’s Miguel-assisted track, “Power Trip,” the Seattle duo’s win with their video “Can’t Hold Us” divided some users on Twitter.

“Miley Cyrus is twerking, Macklemorewinship hop video. What’s next, white folks drinking Colt 45?” tweeted @DawnEnglehart. @AlexGruneiro added, “I honestly hope macklemorewins everything Along with Kendrick Lamar Since frank ocean Tyler the creator earl sweatshirt and big Sean can’t.”

The pair also won another award, nabbing a moonman for Best Video For A Social Message for their pro-gay rights anthem, “Same Love” and expressed heartfelt thanks to fans and supporters although the response from inside the Barclays Center seemed muted at best. Lil’ Kim and Iggy Azalea presented the Best Hip-Hop Video Award, with the pint-sized Brooklyn MC looking thicker in the thighs than usual.

Before the official ceremonies, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also nabbed the Best Cinematography Award for “Can’t Hold Us.” as well.

The summer’s hottest crooner Robin Thicke performed "Blurred Lines" tonight at the 2013 VMAs with a little assistance from Miley Cyrus, who also performed "We Can’t Stop" (unfortunately, she didn’t bring out Khia!).

And after Miley stopping grinding long enough in these booty shorts with her tongue out and all on Robin’s private parts, Robin was joined onstage by 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar and the Alabama State University Stingettes for a performance of his latest track, "Give It To You."

In case you missed it…….

Beats By Dre Commercial Announces New Eminem LP [VIDEO]

Eminem is buddies with Dr. Dre, so why wouldn’t a Beats By Dre commercial serve as an announcement for the Detroit rapper’s new album?  MMLP2 (The Marshall Mathers LP 2) will be dropping on November 5.

The commercial premiered during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. After a pair of Beats headphones are plugged in, viewers preview a new song called “Berzerk” off Em’s forthcoming album.

We learn that MMLP2 will be dropping on November 5 and that it will be executive produced by Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin. That is sort of epic.

2013 MTV Video Music Awards: Red Carpet

Danity Kane

No sleep till Brooklyn. MTV rolled out the red carpet at the Barclays Center for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Hip-hop, R&B, pop, and rock stars dressed up and showed out.

Power couple Ciara and Future looked glamorous as they walked down the makeshift Brooklyn Bridge, Miley Cyrus arrived with “We Can’t Stop” producer Mike WiLL Made It, and Rita Ora made a dramatic entrance in a long white train.

2 Chainz was looking fresh as hell in Versace, Katy Perry roared in animal print, Iggy Azalea was pretty in Pucci, and Ariana Grande battled nerves as she made her way to the stage for her pre-show performance.

A reunited Danity Kane hit the carpet, where they announced their new single “Rage” produced by the Stereotypes, and TLC’s T-Boz and Chilli were matching in black.

Goodie Mob Kicks Off Age Against The Machine Tour In D.C. [PHOTOS]

In the nine-year span between their last album together, the Goodie Mob will return to the charts this week with their fifth body of work, Age Against The Machine. Kicking off a U.S. Tour in Washington, D.C. in support of the new record, the “Dirty South” representatives blazed through tracks both old and new.

The quartet hit the stage donned in dark robes, bizarre headgear and blazed through a crowd-pleasing set. Familiar songs such as “Soul Food,” “Thought Process,” and the classic “Cell Therapy” thrilled fans. Newer joints, such as the current Janelle Monae-assisted single “Special Education” worked well in the live setting with thumping drums blasting throughout the venue.

Cee Lo delivered a quick solo set, rocking his Timbaland collaboration “I’ll Be Around” before launching into a raunchy call and response routine. The Gnarls Barkley artist then introduced Big Gipp, decked out in a 70s-styled outfit,  who then ran through a series of solo bangers such as “Steppin’ Out.”

Opening for the the Atlanta veterans on the tour, California trio Drop City Yacht Club bill themselves as “Beastie Boys meets Beach Boys” and spoke with HipHopWired backstage after the show.

Bay Area Rappers A-Wolf and Kristo and Los Angeles producer THX explained that the group name was inspired by the actual Drop City in southern Colorado. Displaying the same zaniness found on their latest single “Crickets” with R&B crooner Jeremih, the Yacht Club kids delivered laughs along with their answers.

“Drop City (in Colorado) was the first hippie community ever,” explained Kristo. “So there’s an element of that in our music. And there’s an element of the yacht club. Musically, we’re not supposed to make sense. It’s like if you took the Beach Boys and the Beastie Boys and smashed them together, that’s pretty much who we are.”

Both A-Wolf and Kristo credited E-40 and Too Short as inspirations growing up in the Bay. Wolf also mentioned performers such as MC Hammer, Janis Joplin, and Metallica as influences on the crew’s stage show.

A-Wolf shared that the group is working on a new mixtape and an album set to release this fall. The rapper also gave up some of the names they’re working with, such as Jim Jonsin, DJ Khalil, the Sterotypes production team, and more big names they elected to keep secret. “There’s a lot that’s coming, but we’re gonna keep those hidden,” said A-Wolf.

Goodie Mob reps declined all interview requests.

Goodie Mob will release Age Against The Machine on August 27. Check out pics of the set at the 9:30 Club in the gallery.
